Buggy the clown pirate used to be a crew member with the pirate Shanks, both just newly recruited pirates. When they attacked a ship, he discovered a map of the Grand Line on one of the enemy pirates. He hid it away, telling no one. After the plundering of the ship, the crew rejoiced in a boisterous party. Buggy did not join them, he just sat on top of the cabin fondling his newly discovered map of the Grand Line. Shanks approached him and began to talk about the future, how one day they will own their own ship. More importantly, Shanks told Buggy about the Devil's Fruit that was found on defeated ship. The fruit along was worth 1,000,000 Berries. He also told him that it gave anyone who ate the fruit, the powers of the devil but they also suffered the wrath of the sea. He commented to himself, how can one become a pirate if he can't swim? The following day, Buggy replaced the fruit with a fake one. He gathered the crew together and displayed that he was a true pirate. He ate the Devil's Fruit. When the fruit didn't effect him, everyone thought the fruit was a fake in the first place and just ignored the findings. Buggy then planned his escape, he had a Devil's Fruit to sell as well as the map to the Grand Line. He was set to become a great pirate. When he was about to escape, Shanks approached him again. Buggy frantically hid the real Devil's fruit inside his mouth. Shanks didn't notice anything wrong and left without much resistance... only to return a few seconds later with a large smack on the back. This reaction forced the fruit down Buggy's throat. He also fell overboard only to be saved by Shanks. Being the revengeful type, Buggy never forgave Shanks.
